Since my school serves students who are low income, even basic materials for class are sometimes a burden. They often don't have pencils or paper because they have to make a choice between giving every last penny to pay the electric bill or buying a pack of new pencils. A class like AP Research requires even more basic materials than the usual academic class. So in order for these students to follow the curriculum and engage in the research process set forth by the class, they are going to need 5 different color highlighters. It seems strange, but when students are constantly working an evaluating scholarly journals color coding for content and information becomes extremely important. This applies to the sticky notes as well. When presenting their findings the easel and pad will keep their hands free so they can speak and think clearly without having to fumble with their materials. These items seem so basic, but when considering the budget of an entire school there is simply no money to purchase them.
