Unfortunately most of students do not have the opportunity to take and art class until their senior year. There is no room for it in their schedule due to extra reading and math classes they are require to take, and like many public school districts the arts have been drastically cut from the curriculum for a variety of reasons. I am currently and English teacher with an endorsement in art. Through my English classes I have discovered several students who are yearning to have a creative outlet and desire to participate in some type of art class. Together we came up with the idea for an after school art club that would meet once a week. I have some basic drawing supplies, but wanted to do something that would teach the art creation process and would be a more unique experience. I decided that a printmaking project would allow students to tap into their creativity, while teaching the both art process and the elements of art and design. For this project the students will create a a 4 X 6 block print that they can use to create a greeting or holiday card. To accomplish this project I need e-z cut blocks for the students to carve their design into. I already have the carving equipment and rollers to place the ink on the blocks. I will need several tubes of colored ink, and different types of paper to make cards. These supplies will help them learn about a new art medium which they have not been exposed to, printmaking. If this project works well, I hope to incorporate it into a future Art Club fundraiser where students could sell sets of homemade note card.
