Reading is a fundamental skill that receives a good deal of emphasis in a Language Arts classroom. There are numerous objectives that teachers plan for when incorporating both literary and informational texts into their lesson plans. These objectives include exposing students to the world around them and helping students develop a sense of empathy. A Long Walk to Water, which weaves together the stories of a young boy and girl living in Sudan during different decades, helps students work toward developing empathy and deepening their awareness of the world around them. Using this novel in our 8th grade ELA classrooms will help strengthen many literacy skills. Linda Sue Park's rich storytelling will give students a strong example of plot, conflict, theme, and character development. The story will teach students about very real world conflicts, both from the past and present. Perhaps most importantly, students will receive a chance to walk in the shoes of another, which will help them become more empathetic.
