In order to stay up to par with concert ensembles, the right balance of instrumentation in a school band program is key. Providing the students an opportunity to play literature they've always wanted to without being limited by instrumentation issues has been a great challenge this year. It is difficult to find good band literature to play that the students will be challenged by and enjoy without certain instruments in your band. The Electronic Wind Instrument (EWI) is an invention that capitalizes on the usual "over-abundance" of saxophone players in a band, and uses traditional saxophone fingerings and synthesizes a variety of instrument sounds. Typically, saxophone players are asked to play other instruments because it is an overpowering instrument that a full band doesn't need too many players to obtain success. The EWI helps solve this problem. I have been in several ensembles where the EWI was used and it allowed us to be able to play a wider variety of band literature, making it a more enjoyable musical experience as a whole.
