Students will be creating virtual models of what historic world heritage sites might have looked like in the past. With the materials incorporated by DonorsChoose we can bring their creations to life by allowing them to walk through their creations via virtual reality devices like the HTC ViVe. This project serves to connect the past to the present, to cultivate an appreciation for the importance of these sites, as well as to make history more tangible by realizing what it would be like to walk through a to-scale recreated model of the past (as if they went back in time!). They will be complementing this investigation with interactions with local museums and visits to archaeological sights to understand the significance of their work. This project serves to emphasize the interconnectedness between the past and present, and recognize their own ability to contribute to the world’s understanding of its history. Students have decided they want to utilize what they are learning in their graphics design class to create 3D simulations of what these historic sights might have looked like in their heyday to give participants a better understanding of the sights. While 3D models are engaging, the class agrees that the ability to walk through their creations in a virtual reality environment would be much more engaging and interactive. My students need the essential necessary equipment for a virtual reality station to make their dream for their project a reality. The HTC Vive is a virtual reality device that allows the user to walk through a virtual environment as if they were really there. Pairing this technology with the various computer parts necessary in order to run it (motherboard, GPU, etc) will allow the school to have a virtual reality station to bring their creations to life!
