I teach ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) at Rebecca Johnson Elementary School in Springfield, MA. My school is in an urban setting, and we have a large population of Hispanic students who are learning English. This year, I am working with 3 groups of students in 3rd and 4th grade. When it is time for class, I pick up the students from their homerooms and bring them to my classroom for language support. My students and I engage in activities individually, in partners, and in small groups to develop their language abilities in the 4 domains (speaking, listening, reading, and writing). We employ strategies to make grade-level content comprehensible for their language abilities. I love my classroom - it has a lot of natural light and is tucked away in a corner. However, it had previously been a storage area, so consequently it is missing a lot of classroom necessities!
