My project will provide my students with access to texts at their independent and instructional reading levels. Due to my students complex learning profiles, they are reading significantly below grade level. Since my classroom consists of a small percentage of our entire school, our school doesn’t contain many books at their reading levels. Many of the books that we have in our library far exceed my students reading abilities. Therefore, my students are unable to read them. In order to increase reading skills, students need to be provided with texts that they can read. Provided with texts at their levels, my students will be able read with greater fluency, understanding, expand their vocabularies and improve their writing about reading skills. This project will allow students with the practice the skills that are required to read more difficult texts in the classroom and in the world. The literacy goal for my students extends beyond the classroom. Yes, I would like to see my students make academic progress, but my ultimate goal is to provide opportunities for my students to gain literacy skills that are necessary for meaningful post-secondary employment and become productive members of society.
