Over half of my students are non-ambulatory, they are in wheelchairs. Along with being in a wheelchair they have limited use of their hands. Many of the activities my students do require the assistance of a staff member. Staff will use many strategies when working with the students such as hand over hand and physical prompting. Some of my students are unable to participate in hand over and or physical prompting so they are taught to look at or in the direction of something to help them communicate. My classroom set up provides areas where students will work in small groups and whole groups. I provide realia and manipulatives to engage students. We provide frequent breaks and lots of reinforcement. My students enjoy reinforcers that have movement, lights, sound, and texture. They also enjoy participating in cooking or baking activities by helping to pour, stir, or count during the preparation process.
