The target population for this project is first grade students. There are three English classrooms and two Bilingual classrooms. The total number of first grade students in attendance to date is approximately 150 students. According to the 2000 U.S. Census Report, more than 85,600 people live in our community, making it one of the largest communities in the state of Illinois. In 2000, the median household income was $38,044 and the median family income was $40,883. 13.2% of the families were below the poverty level with 57.6% of the individuals 16 years and older in the labor force. The school is located in an area that has gangs and gang violence including drive-by shootings. Many students read and work below grade level. The student population is 96.5% Hispanic and over 75% of our students are considered economically disadvantaged and received free and reduced breakfast and lunch.
