My students are in a significantly low socioeconomic area of Houston where a majority students receive free or reduced lunches. Odom is a Title 1 school due to almost 95% of students receiving free or reduced price breakfast and lunch. Several of my students are part of the Weekend Backpack Buddy Program, sponsored by the Houston Food Bank, where they receive food for the weekend. Many parent can't afford to purchase basic school supplies that are needed in the classroom. These hardships haven't disillusioned them or dampened their spirit and willingness to learn. The students are resilient and eager to tackle new skills and concepts every day. Their exuberance overflows each morning and is reflected in their attitudes toward education as well as the school community.
