Learning about DNA, proteins, and genetics is a difficult concept to grasp. This project will allow students to learn these topics while doing hands-on activities, and the materials can be used for multiple lessons, in both my AP Biology and General Biology courses. This project will allow students to become biotechnologists while using the most advanced technology. The gel electrophoresis apparatus and pipettes will allow students to observe the properties of DNA through a hands-on activity. Using real-world examples, such as GMOs found in food or investigating a crime scene, students will be able to critically assess how the unique sequences of DNA are used. They will also be able to model the importance of DNA sequences in the production of proteins by using the DNA/RNA/protein synthesis kit. These studies will enable the students to become competent learners in STEM.
