As a school counselor, sometimes my responsibilities include speaking to students about their personal hygiene. I have the task of addressing students with clear needs. Although I am capable of speaking to a student or calling a parent to address body odor or hygiene, I am unable to provide a solution. Many of our students come from a home situation in which they cannot consistently afford such items as deodorant or sanitary napkins. After I meet with a student to address hygiene, I would like to be able to provide some items to assist them. I have asked the school nurse what items are needed most by our student population and they expressed that sanitary napkins as well as deodorant or clean change of underwear and socks seem to be the most needed items.
