My students come from a range of backgrounds, but they all come from an underserved and underfunded county in which the average income per household in $28,000. Many of my students have gone through incredible hardships in their short lives and have been unable to relate to many of the books they read at school. I want to introduce a book that may very much strike home with them, and simultaneously may spark a burgeoning interest in pleasure reading on their own. "Joseph" is about a young African-American boy whose mother is addicted to alcohol and drugs and father is oversees fighting in Iraq. He is struggling both at home and school, and his options seem limited. My students have been deprived of relatable material throughout their education, and I hope to bring in something that they can get excited about, and learn from.
