My students are between the ages of 10 and 14. They attended several different local elementary schools. Students fostered healthy relationships there, but also brought drama with them to middle school. There was immediate tension between students from different communities. At the beginning of the year my principal recognized my class as being one of the most challenging groups of children. His advice was to be as strict as possible and not to let anything slide. I decided to take a different approach. It was a difficult first few months of school and I began to wonder if I just had to get used to the classroom climate. Although my students didn't make things easy, I realized very early on how intelligent my students were. I focused on this. My students have proven to be some of the most intelligent students in the school, but they've had trouble communicating their feelings in appropriate ways.
