Fourth graders learn to add, subtract, and estimate using large numbers. What better way to put this work into a real world context, then by measuring our steps? Not only will this give the students a deeper understanding of the meaning of large numbers, by measuring the amount of steps they take in a particular time period, but this will also encourage them to become more physically active! Students will wear the smart bracelets in order to capture data about the amount of steps they take in a regular day. We will use this data in our math work to compare, order, and estimate these large numbers. We will also use addition strategies in order to calculate the amount of steps taken in one week, and use subtraction to compare the difference between our amounts. Using subtraction to compare numbers can be a tricky thing for younger kids to conceptualize, but by placing within the real world context of how much larger or how much smaller our different totals are. The hope is that the students will grow a deeper understanding of how mathematicians work with large numbers and organize data. Additionally, my hope is that the students are motivated to take more steps in order to have larger numbers to work with! We also plan to take a few exciting walking trips in order to gather different sets of data to work with. By combining physical activity and math, the students can enjoy the benefits of both!
