In this lab, students will observe prepared slides of whitefish and onion mitosis. After becoming familiar with the cells on the slide, students will conduct a random sample of cells to determine how much time, in minutes, is spent in each stage of mitosis. Students are required to chart and graph their data, answer thought provoking questions, and become capable of simulating cell division processes using chromosomal pop beads. This lab offers an irreplaceable laboratory experience not found within video demonstrations or virtual labs. Hands-on laboratory skill is a critical component of a science classroom. I hope our donor can consider supporting these aspiring scientists to receive a well-round educational experience by offering these students a chance to look at cell specimens from a realistic (not virtual) view point.
