The Breadwinner is a wonderful story of a girl who shows great courage through her adversity. In the story, Parvana is accustom to going to school, living in a house, going outside, and hanging our with friends. Then the Taliban takes over and changes all the rules and bombs much of her town. She can no longer get an education or go outside alone and lives in a tiny apartment with her family of 6. She courageously finds away to a better life for her and her family. My six graders have just gone through Hurricane Harvey and need to find courage through this adversity. Many students at our school have lost their homes and are living is trailers, tents, or with several other families. Our school was heavily damaged and we have resumed in portable building and due to debris they can not just play outside. They are having to find a new normal. We are hoping that reading and discussing The Breadwinner by Deborah Ellis will be an inspiration to our students. We originally purchased these books at read as part of our 6th grade World Cultures and Geography; however, the books were destroyed in the storm.
