Each Spring my students tackle Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet; we read the play as a class and often have fun acting it out. For many of my students, this is their introduction to Shakespeare and sometimes their introduction to theater as text. I teach every level of 9th grade English (general, college prep, and honors) in six mixed level classes. While some of my high level students might have few problems understanding Romeo and Juliet, for most it's a struggle. I help students by pausing our reading of the traditional text of the play to break down or "translate" what's being read. The No Fear Shakespeare texts are set up with the left page as the original text and the right page as the "translated" modern text with allusions and slang explained. If I were able to put a copy of this text in the hand of every student, they will be able to better understand the play on their own without me as a constant translator. This would enable them to read ahead and to have a more positive independent experience with Shakespeare. This link is an example of how the text is set up. http://nfs.sparknotes.com/romeojuliet/page_4.html
