Many students are unaware of the impact the world outside them has on their community's, and their own, health. The senior-level capstone class that I teach in our school's Biomedical Academy takes a close look at the roles various non-traditional health care professionals take in linking environmental hazards to individual health. Dan Fagin's Pulitzer Prize winning account of the history of a cancer cluster discovered in Toms River, NJ often reads like a novel and is meticulously researched. He takes detailed looks at how statisticians, toxicologists, epidemiologists, and community activists all played a role in shining a glaring light at industrial pollution around the Toms River community. Our curriculum has separate units on statistics, community health, epidemiology, and forensics. After reading the book myself, I realized that not only could I use Fagin's book as a pseudo-textbook with all the above-mentioned units, but my students were likely to identify with the community of Toms River. It is not that far or different from our own.
