My students are well on their way to becoming fluent in a second language. We practice reading and speaking in class, but I would love for them to see real life Spanish examples in magazines and books. This would allow them to practice speaking in the target language and see the sentence structures applied in class. ¿Qué Tal? magazine is tailored for Spanish Level 1 learners and it will be used to practice fluency and comprehension. I plan to pair my students to practice their reading and comprehension skills. The students will learn about Spanish speaking countries, current pop culture and sports news through these magazines. They are well made and included written responses for the students. The Spanish books for our library will be used biweekly (or as needed) to practice more reading fluency and translations. Some of the books I've included are the Spanish versions of childhood books my students may recognize, such as Dr. Seuss and Curious George. These will be used at the beginning of the year after we learn how to read and practice vocabulary. As we progress through the year, we will increase the rigor from elementary books and transition into Spanish novels. Reading, speaking and learning about a new culture all in one. Donations will help expose students to their own Spanish skills, and expand their cultural horizons. A second language is a terrible thing to waste, and my students will be dedicating two, hard-working years to learning Spanish. I want them to immerse themselves in their new language now, and hopefully for the rest of their lives.
