My students need books to practice reading at home, and often times they do not have the resources to be able to get books at home. I plan on giving each student several books to read at home. Having quality books to read will ensure that students have the ability to practice reading at home. It can inspire parents and guardians to practice reading with their student. I know their eyes will light up when they receive a book to take home. We need quality fiction and non-fiction book collections on levels K through 2 to read so they can practice reading at home where they may not have the resources needed to be successful. My goal is to have enough funding for fiction and non-fiction texts so that my students can have a concrete example of both types of writing. I chose the books for my project based on the reading levels I have observed in my classroom. I made sure to request books that are at kindergarten, first grade, and second grade reading levels so I can appropriately challenge each of my students. Many of my students are able to read and decode words. I believe if they had books that interest them, they would enjoy reading and practice it on a daily basis. Also, if they have books that are appropriately challenging, I believe parents will be more motivated to work with them at home. I would love to give my students these books as gifts. The joy in their faces when they receive something is priceless. I believe with the non-fiction and fiction texts I have requested, I can foster a love for reading at an early age.
