All of my students come from households filled with poverty and chaos. Their families often are not able to provide for their basic needs, such as shoes. Young children outgrow shoes very quickly, and additionally, sneakers can break easily while students are playing or running around on the playground. If my students do not have comfortable shoes on their feet, they are unable to focus on their learning and be productive. Many times shoes break throughout the day, and we have nothing to give them. This only adds to their low self-esteems and severe behavioral problems. All of my students suffer from emotional and behavioral disorders, and are distracted and bothered by many things. A lack of shoes that fit correctly shouldn't be one of them! My students' families can simply not provide these basic needs for them, but these needs are crucial and especially urgent. My students have faced so much trauma and chaos in their lives, and a lack of a good pair of shoes should not add to their stresses and difficulties. Additionally, my classroom is constantly disrupted and lessons are frequently interrupted due to behavioral outbursts, so we simply cannot afford to waste any more time-the need for these shoes is quite urgent, and my students need to feel secure knowing that they will have a pair of shoes to wear and play in. While shoes may seem like simple things, one can not possibly comprehend how much these will transform my classroom-my students will feel comfortable and ready to learn, all while building positive self-esteems and increasing positive behaviors.
