STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) occupations are growing at 17%, while other occupations are growing at 9.8%. STEM degree holders have a higher income even in non-STEM careers. STEM education creates critical thinkers, increases science literacy, and enables the next generation of innovators. Innovation leads to new products and processes that sustain our economy. This innovation and science literacy depends on a solid knowledge base in the STEM areas. It is clear that most jobs of the future will require a basic understanding of math and science. STEM education helps to bridge the ethnic and gender gaps sometimes found in math and science fields. STEM is so successful because it uses a ‘focus on fun’ approach, it is tailored to their level, it is relevant, it is hands on, and it is skills based. STEM is not only science, but it heavily fosters the idea of Growth Mindset and the newest research that developing "grit" is the key trait in successful people. Growth mindset teaches students that failing is necessary in order to succeed- this is how the brain learns! STEM is all about failing; you have to fail to create something better. This mindset, fostered by the STEM curriculum, will help students become more creative thinkers and harder workers. The materials I am asking for will be used to create STEM bins and allow students to participate in various STEM activities. A Halloween STEM activity I am looking forward to has the students creating a spider web using string between 2 cups that will be able to hold as many "spiders" (cubes) as possible without tipping or breaking. The things I am asking for a commonly found in grocery stores, but I cannot buy them all- this will keep STEM out of my classroom.
