I am interested in enhancing my students’ learning in my classroom through the use of alternate seating. We, as teachers, expect students to sit still all day. I have many students in my classroom who choose to sit on one leg or stand to do their work. This is not a disruption and is fine as long as they are comfortable. I also enjoy when students are comfortable enough to sit or lie on the floor to do their work. I feel that alternate seating will be a great resource for the students who have a difficult time sitting still or need to move a little bit. It has been proven that physically active and fit students are likely to perform better academically. The Kore Wobble chair and the Zenergy ball chair have been proven to help stimulate the minds of students while engaging core muscle and improving posture. On LiveStrong.com, James Roland states, “Both sides of their brains are engaged in keeping their bodies centered on the balls. And when the brain is stimulated, it's more focused on learning.” Teachers in Maine, Kentucky, and Florida have used similar seating in their classrooms with positive results. I have a large group of ADD and ADHD students in my classes. This type of seating will be a great addition for them. It will give them the ability to release some of their energy and increase their concentration skills at the same time.
