Throughout the year I have been working to help my students cultivate their "good reader" skills in order to prepare them for sixth grade, and help them gain a love for reading. But because of this, many of the classroom activities have involved stop and start conversations about how to comprehend, infer, and analyze. This has given my students the ability to master their reading skills, but has left them little time to independently read culturally relevant texts and discuss them in a group setting. Currently, when my students read, many of them enjoy sitting or laying on the ground. Because reading should be fun, I allow them to sit however they would like to get the most our of their independent reading time. This is why, in addition to the actual books, I have requested flexible seating. By donating to our classroom, you will be helping each student read and connect to characters and events that are applicable to their everyday lives, in turn, teaching social emotional learning as well as facilitating grade level reading skills. Wonder is a book that addresses many of the complicated situations students face in childhood and gives the reader a chance to reflect on how to handle these situations in life. The goal of our class is not solely to develop strong readers, but to also develop kind, change-making humans who are driven to take the skills they learn in class and apply them to every day life.
