Flexible seating supplies will empower my students to choose what works for them while completing classroom tasks, all the while engaging muscle groups that will improve their gross and fine motor skills. Wobble stools, wobble cushions, and stability balls engage and tone the core area which, in turn, develops children's ability to run, kick, jump, and even write! Research shows that flexible seating increases student engagement and focus. By bringing these materials into a kindergarten classroom, we can begin teaching the children to advocate for their own learning style and, at the same time, model for them what focus and engagement look like and why they are important for success in school. Finally, students with special needs will benefit from the use of the materials as they provide much-needed sensory support. Wobble stools, cushions, and stability balls help students with low core strength, a common weakness for students with autism and other developmental delays. The chair bands will help students with ADHD and other focusing difficulties channel their energy and focus on their learning, thus increasing student engagement. Wobble cushions also help wiggly students focus and participate during our carpet time which is where the majority of our kindergarten instruction takes place.
