I came to this school in August and was given a classroom that had not been occupied. I loved the “blank canvas,” but that also meant that we were missing some items. One of the things we need most is a comfortable, durable, and safe classroom rug that fits all of my students with a few extra spots for those children who might want or need to move around. But why a rug you ask? I use a rug to gather my students to give them a better sense of community. Children need fewer reminders to pay attention when they’re sitting close together and near the teacher. Because students never sit in the same spot every time, “turn and talk” is more varied and allows them to speak to a wider variety of their peers. In addition, the teacher can hear the students better, the students can hear the teacher better, and the students can hear each other better—a win for everyone! Our current rug does not provide enough space for everyone, requiring some students to sit on the linoleum floor. It's hard for everyone to settle and concentrate without comfortable and sufficient personal space.
