We are reading this in a small group and comparing the main character to ourselves. Many of my students come from homes where their parents are trying to provide the daily necessities like food and shelter.
Students who can read, have the entire world at their fingertips. By giving them books to read in the classroom, their education can be improved to the next level. By increasing their love of reading, I am increasing their love of knowledge. I hope they never stop reading.
We need more copies of Hatchet and Wonder. These specific titles correspond to the subjects that we are studying. Right now our ELA module is about Biomes and rain forests. Hatchet ties in with this nicely, while engaging the students. Bridge to Terabithia is a story about a 5th grade boy and his struggles at school. This book helps children to understand that others go through what they have gone through. Wonder is also an excellent book when it comes to teaching children about social diversity. Wonder is also coming out in movie theaters and I want to read it with my students before it does. We love comparing and contrasting movies to books after we have read them.
I am an organized individual and know exactly where these books will go in my cabinet with the other chapter books I am trying to collect for them. We have checked some out of the library, I have bought several, and borrowed several from co workers, but it would be nice to have our own set.
