My students lack both empathy and access to relevant and rich literature. When each student is holding a copy of Wonder to read, they will begin to see the way diversity is powerful, accepting others is easy, showing kindness can go a long way, and how overcoming one's personal challenges can happen! I envision reading this novel as a whole class for rich discussions among my blended learning group, as well as in leveled groups for more focused discussions about language and comprehension. I am hoping that my student develop empathy and understanding for their peers through this reading in order to have a more harmonious classroom environment. I believe this novel can assist kids in looking within themselves toward spreading more kindness, changing how they respond to situations, and learning to slow down to understand each other rather than making critical judgments. I would like to begin and end this novel with students writing about how they view themselves as a person, classmate, and friend. I hope to see that the novel help everyone to grow toward more kind tendencies and see how their view of themselves have change, or grown more detailed and complex.
