Literacy is at the foundation of all content areas and independent reading is a fundamental way to develop a learner's language skills. At my middle school, twenty five minutes of the each day is dedicated to sustained silent reading, but this is challenged when there aren't enough engaging books from which to choose from. For our black and brown children of low-economic background, it is not always easy to find well-developed, complex books that are written by and about people of color, of high interest and low reading levels for our struggling readers or in their home language. The latter is especially important as an ENL teacher because research shows that when you develop a student's home language literacy, you directly support their continued development in the English language. All of the aforementioned factors in providing more individualized books hold much value because in middle school all learners are, in a way, English language learners and able to fall in love with reading,
