When I first became a teacher, I was excited about all the pretty things! Border, decorations and pictures oh my! Classroom design can often become a competition between teachers to create the most Pinterest worthy design. One thing I learned in my first year of teaching is classroom design should meet the needs of the students first, then be beautiful to the adult eye. Here is what’s important to remember: some students learn best in a calm, clean, uncluttered environment. Some students have a hard time focusing on the lessons when there is color everywhere, decorations hanging from the ceiling, piles of books, papers and junk laying on the counters. On a mission to better serve my students, I set out to redesign my classroom into one that is muted in color, focusing on white, black, and tan. I choose to let my student’s artwork and writing be the pop of color in my classroom. I have moved to a new town, new school. My new classroom will be void of a carpet for us to gather together and learn. This carpet is the place where relationships are made! Here, we learn about each other, share good things in our life, laugh at silly stories, show off how much we have learned and share the best parts of our day. A rug is essential for classroom management because it often provides clear spots for students to sit. Each student can be assigned a spot to help them focus and learn better. I see my students laying on the carpet reading, tracing the letters and numbers with their hands during transition times, hopping from one letter to the next to get wiggles out during brain breaks and so much more!
