In my second year of teaching at this school, I want to incorporate more cross-curricular teaching strategies in the class. My students are always engaged in science and the science process. As future citizens, I want nothing more than my students to learn critical thinking and literacy skills to make decisions in their every day lives. More than half of the school is at or below grade reading level, and I believe there is room to improve reading skills outside of their ELA or reading classes. My students spend some time learning about dangerous pathogens, how they invade the body, and the effects they have on human health. This novel is a great way to tie reading and comprehension skills with the science curriculum. The donations to this project will go to purchasing a class set of Caroline B. Cooney's novel Code Orange, recommended by the National Science Teacher Association. The novel is about a teenage boy, Mitty Blake, who lives in New York City with his parents. He is carefree and does not worry much about his grades or school. He is assigned a virus assignment for his biology class that he is not excited for. However, he considers it good luck when he finds some old medical books in his family’s weekend house that focus on something he could write about. But when he discovers an old envelope with two scabs in one of the books, the report is no longer about the grade—it’s about life and death: his own.
