My students are high school struggling readers. I want them to enjoy reading and see how reading can enrich their lives, so I want reading materials that they will enjoy. These selections are ideal for that goal. They can read the novel along with other students and have an opportunity to discuss the events and characters with their classmates. The magazines will offer timely articles on current topics that will introduce my students to the world of adult responsibilities. This is the first year for these classes in our school; therefore, we do not have materials geared for the class. I would love to have some help funding the supplies. The items I've chosen include a fiction novel by Sherman Alexie. He writes books about his Native American experience and about his transfer from the reservation life to the "white" world. He's an over comer and inspires our struggling students with his stories of success and overcoming poverty and hardship. The magazines offer high interest non-fiction articles about issues that our students care about. Most of my students will not watch the news or read a news magazine, but when required to read about current events, they find that they care deeply about our world. They can see that the hardships they face in this life are minimal compared to children around the world who struggle daily to survive. I want them to look outside themselves to see that there are things we can do to help end suffering; there are organizations we can join that are already working in the under-developed countries. We are not helpless, but we must know of the suffering and of the relief efforts to be able to help.
