The students in my class are 9th and 10th graders in a special school that serves special education students, who are predominantly classified as being emotionally disturbed. Their lives are filled with conflict and struggle. Many travel across the city to come to school each day. Still more come from fractured homes, that have been impacted by drugs, crime, divorce, and violence. They face daily interaction with people, who believe the worst about them because of the way they look, where they come from, who they know, and what they believe. Our school stands for many of them as their last best chance to turn their lives around before it is too late. We are partnering with ABC Family to continue to develop our school into a safe haven for all of our students. We are working together to raise awareness about bullying, and to make each of our classrooms a place filled with meaningful discussion, and devoid of gangland threats, ridicule, and violence.
