The interventions and supports I use to support the students ability to access their language skills so they communicate their wants, needs, and feelings include: visuals of emotions and feelings, choice boards with visuals of "why" they are feeling this feeling and response actions they could choose and practice. I frequently utilize bibliotherapy to support learning of new or unique feelings. While they are helpful, and role-playing, modeling by myself and practice opportunities frequently support skill building, students are often interested and motivated when viewing cartoons, kids acting, or other dynamic displays through technology mediums. Using an iPad to view situations and identify feelings and appropriate response actions, coupled with role playing, will help them to develop and use these skills and provide access to more dynamic and engaging activities.
