My project will build upon our existing math and science program by increasing engagement with an elective that focuses on reviewing content through project-based learning activities. The class will take on an inquiry based approach that broadens students' critical thinking skills. My special day class participated in the Hour of Code before and they love it. I think that adding coding will bring out the strengths of our highest needs students that may not necessarily manifest itself in a traditional classroom setting.
These items will help keep the elective class rigorous and and students can take what they learn with them because these experiences are intentionally designed to get them to follow through the creative process. The robots Ozobot and Sphero will bring coding to life for our students, and the accompanying lessons will get them to develop a basic understanding of robots and their functions while they continue to program. The Breakout EDU kit will serve as a team-building exercise for students to explore and experiment as they receive instant feedback and feel a sense of accomplishment. Students review topics such as graphing or reading a map and work together to "break out" of the box.
Through the experiences that this elective will bring, I hope that our students can develop the mindset and strategies to build resilience so they can face any challenge that they encounter in their lives. Today, they are building robots. Tomorrow, they are building the world.
