Children learn through pretend play. When children engage in play, they are imagining themselves in social roles in the community, such as playing "chef" in the kitchen, making a school bus drive through town to pick up students like themselves, or making puppets talk to each other. Unfortunately for some of my students, toys that help encourage these skills are not available at home. We need a wooden barn with animals, a train set, pretend food and other imaginative play toys. These toys will help my students grow their expressive language skills through imitation of language models from adults and their peers. This will help them build vocabulary, learn to share with others, and encourage conversational skills. While playing, my students will practice problem solving, learn everyday social routines, develop the ability to sustain attention and build self-esteem.
