For first graders, there is no better way to learn than by hands-on activities. If my students are able to touch, manipulate and experiment with learning materials, they are exponentially more engaged and when students are engaged, true learning may happen. Any educator knows that using hands-on activities is the most effective way to engage young students, unfortunately, those hands-on activities tend to be considered non-essential in the school setting and it becomes the teacher's financial burden to fund those materials. The items I have chosen for this project are designed to increase student engagement, therefore, increasing student learning. Here is an example of what I imagine my classroom will look like with the hands-on materials that I have requested. Students are split up into groups according to their abilities working all around the room. One group is now able to hear themselves read, without distracting their neighbors by using the Whisper Phones. Another group is engaged in a cooperative math game using the large magnetic spinners, learning place value. Another group is enjoying becoming more fluent with their math facts using the Daily Math Fluency Kit. And finally, the last group is getting a small group lesson about phototropism from myself, using the Maze Planter and Tabletop Easel to record students' hypothesis and observations. All of this is happening while the Echo Dot (Kids) plays relaxing classical music in the background and then chimes to let us all know that it is time to rotate to the next station. Each item on this list will directly impact my students' learning by increasing their engagement!
