I am requesting comfortable Big Joe floor chairs for students so they can relax during reading. These materials will help my students form a positive relationship with books. Most of my students have only had bad experiences reading or feeling "forced" to read. With the donation of these items, students will have a place to read during sustained silent reading (SSR time) every Friday during their English Language Arts class as well as every day during Homeroom. I want my students to realize how reading can lead to connection. Reading should be comfortable and enjoyable. Students should have an opportunity to feel the comfort of reading. The resources provided will help students to engage with a text and feel comfortable while doing so. Currently, students are seated upright in a desk when reading and are not able to feel relaxed and engaged. Reading in a desk or on the floor does not provide them with a close connection with a book. Instead, they often feel like it is another assignment instead of an enjoyable activity. Having comfortable places for them to read will hopefully change their mindset about reading.
