Many of my students have never been near a horse, let alone get the chance to ride one, or climb a 40' rock climbing tower, or had the chance to learn how to sail. Our students have worked incredibly hard in their first two years of high school, taking rigorous, project-based STEAM courses to prepare them for their futures. When we asked our students what opportunity they would most like to experience before leaving our program and moving on to 11th grade, they overwhelmingly said "CAMPING!" My students have been working since the fall to fundraise for their trip of a lifetime—where they will have to sleep outside, work together to accomplish challenges, and push themselves to try activities they have never tried before. Currently, the only thing that is preventing them from attending this trip is the cost of the transportation. In addition to the learning, growth, and outdoor experiences, my students have been offered the opportunity to tour a college and begin to see themselves in the next phase of their high school career—so they can begin the 11th grade with a clear picture of a popular, attainable, post-secondary option.
