A class set of Bus 57 books, by Dashka Slater, is the perfect addition to our study of strong, courageous young adults. My students enjoy reading, studying, and discussing real-life heroes who face challenges and defy obstacles with positive spirit and grit. They seem to thrive on learning about these positive role models, such as Anne Frank, Malala Yousafzai, and the Mirabal sisters of the Dominican Republic. My students have been fascinated and inspired by these heroic examples from other countries, but the book Bus 57 brings the gives students two examples of teenagers from their own country (and state), who stand up for justice, overcome their hardships--and their mistakes--and survive.
