5th Grade Social Studies teacher. I decided after my children were grown I wanted to go to college and become a TEACHER. At the age of 62 I can proudly say that I am a first-year teacher. I teach Social Studies in an inner-city public school. The students in my classroom are full of curiosity and enthusiasm about learning. Unfortunately, the school district I work in, like so many others, is in a serious budget deficit. Had it not been for a fellow teacher at my school I would not even have a globe in my classroom. Every day I see the reseilency that these young people have already acquired. All of them "get it" that higher education is necessary. But as the educator I can see how we grown-ups are short changing them. When a classroom of thirty kids has to share one box of markers it is not hard to see how much our society values children. Please help our children.
