I teach 31 kindergartners at a Chicago Public School in the Little Village neighborhood. 99% of my students qualify for reduced or free lunch. I'd like this money to go towards buying fantastic children's literature. As you may know children's picture books are not cheap...and there are so many good ones out there and I want them for my students. I want them because it's exactly what they need to ignite the reading fire to make them readers for life. Their faces contain continents. World upon worlds of wonder and complexity that sing out to me and make cause for celebration and awe. These are my students. All 31 of them confidently entrusted to me. I've watched students who fretted over their inability to write their name become students who write with unabashed confidence and style, always the most eager to share their work with their peers. I've watched students shy and fearful of not making friends become the polka-dotted social butterflies they never thought they'd be.
