The majority of our amazing 3rd graders come from trailer homes, or low-income households. Most receive free or reduced price lunch. Many of these children lack a quiet place to read or have circumstances at home that make it difficult for them to function at one hundred percent when they come to school. Yes, 8 and 9-year-old students from our school often live like this. This was the case before Hurricane Harvey and now it may be even more difficult for many of them. Somehow, these wonderful students still manage to come to school with a smile and hug for me upon arrival.
