My students all have disabilities. Some significant, some not. They also come from an impoverished area of Dallas. One thing all my students share is the desire to communicate with us and the world. Technology will help them do this. My students are precious to me. While I am able to make a lot of the materials I use with them, I cannot duplicate technology. We have some desktop computers in our classroom, but they are outdated and not portable. Many of my students have Autism, and prefer to work in solitude. If we were to get some iPads, those same students would be able to carry their device to a place in which they felt comfortable enough to work. Often, my students do not engage with people on a consistent basis due to their autism. Technology seems to bring them closer to concepts and ideas than I can. My students deserve a chance to experience technology in order to become more adapted to the world around them!
