I have been a math coach at our school for several years. We are a Title 1 school which means we have a large population of students that are from low income households. I coach students from second through fifth grade. My students are smart and they really like math. They are always eager to learn new math concepts. I'm excited for the possibility of getting these supplies. I have my students do projects that use their imagination. One project uses graphing paper to design a garden with a specific measurement. Their first draft is a simple design but as they share ideas it becomes more complex. In addition to the graphing paper, I would like to get rulers, regular and colored pencils and erasers. This will facilitate their design. My students sometimes they use math websites such as Math Antics, Khan Academy, and Math Playground. Using these websites requires headphones and our headphones are old and falling apart. Another activity uses dice to practice math skills. Younger students ones practice addition. Older students practice multiplication. Currently, we have 6-sided dice but the 10-sided dice I want to buy would be more challenging. The dice will also be used for math games such as Build a Number and Area Dice Game. My students love geometry. One activity I would like them to do requires protractors, which we don’t have. With this activity they write their names using a ruler and then measure the angles of the letters. Often my students surprise me with their creativity and imagination. I like to keep all work in folders, and then choose their best ones for display them in during open house.
