It has happened!! The light at the end of the tunnel is shining bright and we are bringing life back to Kindergarten! We are letting children play again, but play is not a kitchen set, it is a mindset! Authors of the book "Purposeful Play" say that play isn't a luxury, it's a necessity. School administrators are finally listening and incorporating bigger and better play in schools. When it comes to Common Core State Standards, there is no map to dictate how we get there, just that we need to get there. Play allows a plethora of opportunities to reach these standards in ways that impact the students the most, on a personal level. They are in control of their educational destination. Being among the lowest 300 schools in Florida, my school has now integrated an extra hour of instructional time into our students' days. With hopes that we can start at the lowest grade level and work our way up in all of our areas of need, we have incorporated purposeful play into our Kindergarten curriculum. Purposeful play will provide support for all types of learners developmentally, linguistically, physically, and academically. The materials selected are beyond kitchen sets and teacher constructed centers; they will allow us as a class to create different kinds of spaces in the classroom for children to learn. The blocks will be used to create structures that can be turned into stores, restaurants, offices, or anything the students collectively desire. This connects so much to STEM. The puppets can be used to recreate stories or create new ones that can be later written and added to the classroom library. The possibilities are endless!
