My Spanish classroom is full of unique & curious learners from a variety of backgrounds. We latch onto their curiosity as we explore the language, traditions & peoples of Spanish-speaking countries. The best way we found to feed their curiosity is with pen pals. Last year we started exchanging letters with a class in Mexico. It was an amazing experience to see students explore how to use what they know to communicate with an authentic audience. We were fascinated with how they wrote, how their lives compared to ours, and their perspectives on current events in the U.S. This year we hope to move from paper to digital so students have more continual communication that does not rely on teachers to facilitate. In my class you can often find students singing, using computers for review games, research or to watch videos, & rotating around the room to practice conversations with a dash of laughter almost every day.
