In this project students will be introduced to the power of literacy and how people all around the world access books. Students build reading skills while learning about how people have gone to great lengths to access literacy. While doing this, students also delve into geography, considering how where one lives affects how one accesses knowledge via books. Because this is not a topic that I can just explain to students, we will need technology to authenticate for students. I don't just want to tell students how Children access books around the world, I want them to experience how students access knowledge all around the world! This project needs to come to life! Many of my students lack geographical knowledge of the U.S. as well as the world. In order to make the project resonate with my students I will need technology as a visual, auditory and tactile aid in accessing all information need to make this project "real" for them. This module is intentionally designed to encourage students to embrace a love of literacy and reading. Throughout this project students receive information about how children in other countries go to great lengths to to access books. Most of this information is read to them or they read small excerpts themselves. Having an IPAD in the classroom allows students to view photos and videos of how library camels carry books weighing up to 400 pounds to children in who live in nomadic villages in Kenya. Reading about how people access book in countries vs. providing students with an experience, loaded with video and visual aids will allow them to internalize this project and really begin to develop a love for reading, literacy and books!
