Our students have many books at their disposal both hard copy and electronic. However, when someone is given a book, and told it is their own book, a relationship develops not only with the characters in that book, but with reading itself. Owning their own copy of The Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison will give us the opportunity to read and study the novel in class while allowing the students to annotate along the way and keep the book with them for the rest of their lives. Once we finish the book, the students can proudly place it upon their own shelf and say, yes, I've read that. And, who knows, they may take it down from time to time like spending time with an old friend.
